Fitness Report, Week 8

DIET
Huge fail this week.  I not only didn't track, but I didn't stay on track very well.

EXERCISE

Six days, thanks to the snow shoveling I did on Sunday morning.  I've also changed up my workouts a bit.  Since I've been at the same weight for almost a month, I thought that perhaps I've cardio-ed away all the unstubborn fat I can.  I decided to add more strength training.  I'm now doing 15-20 minutes of cardio and then the remaining 10-15 minutes are used for strength training.  I'm trying to build some muscle in hopes that I'll burn more calories on a daily basis.

HEALTHY CHANGE

I failed here too.  It's Halloween--was I really not supposed to bring any bags of candy into the house?  There are exceptions to rules, and this was one of them.  Yes, I brought bags of candy home.  Will I do it again? No.

GENERAL

I'm not trying to use it as an excuse, but I do think that if I could get all of us healthy it would make a big difference. Craig's coughing had been keeping both of us up most of the night.  We've been tired and sluggish.  On Thursday he went to the doctor and was diagnosed with a respiratory infection and pneumonia.  He's on meds now and is slowly improving.  As a result, I've been sleeping better.  So, I'm hoping things will look up this week.

Occasionally I have to remind myself that my goal isn't merely to lose weight, it's to feel better.  When I remember this I can find accomplishments to celebrate that don't involve the scale.  Take a look at the waist and hip measurements-- they're moving in the right direction.  Toning my muscles and feeling good are definitely important, so I'm going to consider this week a success.

THE DETAILS

Weight change from last week: +.2 lbs
Total Weight loss: 8.4 lbs
Neck measurement: no change

Asian Flair

I was driving around a neighborhood full of Colonial and Victorian homes when I suddenly came upon this beauty.  A craftsman with Asian details.  I love the multileveled roofline, the woodwork around the front door, the decorative roof braces.  Please also notice the bust and decoration on the ridgepoles.  I am seriously in love with this house.

Autumn in My backyard

Four years ago I planted these two trees in our backyard in hopes of future shade.  I purposely chose maples that would provide brillant Fall colors. This year the trees grew like crazy and gave lots of shade.

The colors are brillant, covering the range from green, to yellow, orange and red.

Some of them have fallen and made pretty pictures on my lawn.

I don't even mind when they turn crisp and brown....

because these guys love to rake them into piles and have fun.

Autumn is the best!

Fitness Report, Week 7

DIET
I tracked really well this week until Friday.  Both Craig and I are battling the flu.  Craig has it pretty bad, and I'm working hard to keep it at a minimum.

EXERCISE
Four days.

HEALTHY CHANGE

Healthy Change #7 had me calculate the pounds of fresh vegetables required to feed my family for a week.  I did that, then added up how much I actually bought.  I only had 41% of the recommended amount.  We do supplement with frozen veggies, but not enough to make up the other 59%.  This is definitely and area for me to continue working on.

GENERAL
Despite the flu, I'm still feeling pretty good overall.  This week I noticed that I completed task, which had previously made my back ache, without any pain.  That's an improvement.

THE DETAILS
Weight change from last week: -.6 lbs
Total Weight loss: 8.6 lbs
Neck measurement: no change
Waist measurement: no change

Hip measurement: no change

Vine covered brick

This adorable home has Tudor leanings and a darling, vine covered portico.

And the vines continue on to the side of the home.  Vine covered, red brick?  Swoon.

The photos don't do it justice

I don't have much to brag about, but I thought I'd let you all be jealous of my surroundings.  I took these while running my errands last week.  They're just shots around town.

Fitness Report, Week 6

DIET
I failed to track my food a few days this week and it showed on the scale.  This week I'm recommitting myself to faithful tracking.

EXERCISE
Four days.  Hurray!  But, I've noticed that the same exercise that used to work up a good sweat isn't really doing that any more.  I need to up my intensity level to get the same work out.

HEALTHY CHANGE

Healthy Change #6 was another easy one.  As I've mentioned before, I don't have any trouble staying away from soda.  I've never drunk coffee or tea.  Juice is also a special treat around here, so that leaves milk and water.  I used to drink lots of milk with everything, but in the last couple years I've cut my serving size in half at meal times.  Now I'm drinking water with meals too, and only occasionally having a glass of milk.

GENERAL
Yesterday I put on a skirt that fit better than when I bought it.  Now that it's cooler here and I'm starting to wear more warm clothing I'm discovering that my shape is changing.  The change seems slow to me since I'm in my body every day, but when I put on the clothing that I wore last winter I can definitely see and feel a difference.

THE DETAILS
Weight change from last week: -.4 lbs
Total Weight loss: 8 lbs
Neck measurement: no change
Waist measurement: no change

Hip measurement: no change

Two story sun porch

I love the two story, screened in sun porch on this house.  The widow's walk on the top is the perfect finishing touch.  This is an addition success.

School district serving cereal for lunch when food runs out

Yesterday Goosey came home and told me that the school ran out of lunch and the rest of the kids (about two classes worth) were given cereal for lunch.  Umm....WHAT?  This is the first I've heard about this, probably because this year Goosey is during the last lunch group of the day.

After asking around and calling the district Food Services Office I found out that not only are they given cereal, the options were Cocoa Puffs or Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  Those aren't even healthy options.

One mom told me that her daughter was starving by the time she got home yesterday because she had been one of the unfortunate ones that got cereal.  Cocoa Puffs, to be exact, which she does not buy for her children.

Another mom commented on my Facebook posting about it that the same kids always seem to be getting cereal.  That makes sense, since it's first come, first serve.  Those poor kids!  Some of them go to the after school YMCA program or the Boys and Girls Club.  Six hours is a long time to last on a bowl of cereal.

I understand that there are challenges in trying to estimate the number of lunches you need on a given day.  However, I don't understand why sugar laden cereals are the alternative.  Loaves of (frozen) bread and peanut butter and jelly or cans of tuna could be kept in the kitchen.  Or, a phone call could be made to the middle school that is literally next door to see if they have extra of their lunch that day (or of anything).

I think we can do better.  I expect the district to do better.  This is an unacceptable arrangement that needs to be fixed.  And, it seems to me that possible solutions are neither difficult nor costly.  If you live in my town contact your principal and the district Food Services Office.  Let them know how you feel.

Fitness Report, Week 5

DIET
This weekend was a little rough for the diet.  I didn't go completely overboard, but I had a couple of days when I went a little over my target.

EXERCISE
Only three days.  My fourth day was hijacked by taking a sick child to the doctor.  Turns out she had pneumonia,  so it was a worthwhile trip.

HEALTHY CHANGE

Healthy Change #5 is one I've been working on since the beginning--exercise most days of the week and sweat.  For me, this is the hardest aspect of my fitness plan to achieve.  Because I exercise first thing in the morning I so often have other demands that seem to take precedence-- sick kids, doctors appointments, volunteering at the school.  When those things happen I fully intend to exercise in the evening instead, but to be completely honest, I'm usually exhausted (physically, mentally and emotionally) by that time and just want to relax.

GENERAL
I didn't have the most stellar week for my plan, but I think my body is understanding what I'm trying to do here because I still came out alright in the end.  Also, from my high weight point last June, I've lost more than 15 pounds and more than 5% of my body weight.  That feels good.

Oh, this week I also had someone ask me if I'd been losing weight.  That's a first.

THE DETAILS
Weight change from last week: -2.8 lbs
Total Weight loss: 7.6 lbs
Neck measurement: -.5 inches
Waist measurement: -1.0 inches
Hip measurement: no change

Creative Trim

While I wouldn't choose the same colors, I love how the homeowners have decided to highlight the woodwork on this house with paint.  I definitely smile when I see this house.

Fitness Report, Week 4

DIET
This week I was very successful in sticking to my caloric intake.  I feel like it's not a big challenge, but rather something that's becoming a habit.  I stuck to my daily caloric goal and usually came in a little under.

EXERCISE
Only two days of formal exercise, but I felt like I was running around all week.  Does that count?

HEALTHY CHANGE

Healthy Change #4 was a pleasure to work on.  Getting midday sunshine most days? Awesome.  The challenge is especially important to me because at my last physical my blood work revealed that my Vitamin D levels were low.  Not a surprise, really, knowing that I live in the region of the US that has the highest levels of Vitamin D deficiency.

I did have some challenges since we've had lots of rain here this week, but I felt like I did a good job.  The challenge will be the winter.  I'm going to have to try to overcome my aversion to sub-freezing temperatures and get out for walks any way.

GENERAL
I am so pleased with my results this week, and that motivates me to keep going for another week.  I also love that my clothing is starting to feel a little looser and I'm feeling better overall.  And, I'm just above my goal of losing 1 lb. per week.

THE DETAILS
Weight change from last week: -3.2 lbs
Total Weight loss: 4.8 lbs
Neck measurement: -.5 inches
Waist measurement: -1.0 inches
Hip measurement: no change
